The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for leading the Mechanical Design team, managing project delivery from concept through to construction, and ensuring work is completed on time, within budget, and to a high standard. This role combines technical design, team leadership, and client engagement.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Mechanical Engineers and Drafters.
- Foster a high-performance culture focused on technical excellence and collaboration.
- Manage team workloads, resources, and project priorities.
- Support the professional growth and development of junior engineers.
Project Delivery
- Manage mechanical design projects from concept design through to construction.
- Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary project teams, including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, fire, and specialist consultants.
- Lead project meetings and manage stakeholder communication throughout the project lifecycle.
- Monitor project progress, budgets, milestones, and client satisfaction.
Technical Excellence
- Prepare and review mechanical services designs, calculations, specifications, and documentation.
- Conduct independent design reviews and technical quality checks.
- Oversee QA/QC processes to ensure compliance and consistency across all deliverables.
- Perform and review mechanical design calculations including heat load analysis, ESP calculations, and HVAC system design.
- Apply value engineering principles to deliver practical and cost-effective solutions.
- Ensure compliance with Australian Standards, NCC requirements, and industry best practice.
Client & Business Development
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, contractors, architects, and project stakeholders.
- Lead client-facing communications and project coordination activities.
- Identify project variations and manage scope changes effectively.
- Represent the business professionally and contribute to ongoing client retention and growth.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will possess:
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- 10+ years' experience within a Building Services Consultancy environment.
- Proven experience leading engineering teams and mentoring technical staff.
- Strong project management and multidisciplinary coordination experience.
- High-level knowledge of HVAC and mechanical services design.
- Experience using industry-standard design software and calculation packages.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and leadership skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities simultaneously.
Highly Regarded
- CPEng and/or NER accreditation.
- Experience leading large-scale commercial, healthcare, education, industrial, or mixed-use developments.
- Exposure to CFD modelling and advanced mechanical design analysis.
