Welding Engineering Technician

A Poly Welding Engineering Technician conducts materials testing and analysis of HDPE and thermoplastic piping systems, including destructive and non-destructive testing, failure investigation, and evaluation of mechanical and thermal properties. The role supports engineers by analysing material performance, assisting in material selection, and ensuring compliance with engineering and material standards.

Task & responsibilities

• Inspect and monitor HDPE butt fusion, electrofusion, extrusion, and socket fusion welding activities
• Assist in the development, qualification, and implementation of WPS/PQR
• Provide technical support to welding operations and fabrication teams
• Verify welding parameters, consumables, and welder qualifications
• Conduct pressure and leak testing of piping systems
• Identify weld defects, analyse causes, and recommend corrective actions
• Prepare welding reports, QA/QC documentation, and weld traceability records
• Maintain weld maps and fabrication documentation systems
• Interpret engineering drawings, welding specifications, and pipeline layouts
• Ensure compliance with Australian Standards and welding codes
• Recommend process improvements to enhance welding quality and efficiency

Qualification & experience

• Poly welding qualifications and certifications in butt fusion and electrofusion welding are highly regarded.
• Relevant experience in HDPE pipeline construction, poly welding, thermoplastic fabrication, pipeline QA/QC, or welding inspection.
