POSITION SUMMARY
The Leading Hand – Vehicle Body Builder is responsible for leading and working alongside a skilled team to fabricate, assemble and modify heavy vehicle bodies and transport equipment. This role combines hands-on vehicle body building expertise with day-to-day supervision of workshop activities to ensure high-quality workmanship, safe systems of work and delivery of projects on time and to specification.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership & Team Supervision

Lead, guide, and support a team of vehicle body builders and fabricators.

Allocate daily tasks and manage workflow to meet production schedules and deadlines.

Provide hands-on technical support, coaching and mentoring to team members.

Foster a strong safety culture and lead by example in all workshop activities.
Vehicle Body Building & Fabrication

Carry out and oversee fabrication, welding, assembly and fitting of heavy vehicle bodies and components.

Interpret and work from engineering drawings, specifications and job instructions.

Ensure all work meets quality standards, customer requirements and compliance specifications.

Troubleshoot fabrication issues and implement practical and efficient solutions.
Quality & Continuous Improvement

Inspect completed work to ensure accuracy, durability and finish quality.

Identify opportunities to improve fabrication methods, efficiency and material use.

Support continuous improvement initiatives within workshop processes and outputs.
Safety & Compliance

Ensure compliance with WHS legislation, company policies and safe work procedures.

Conduct and participate in toolbox talks and risk assessments.

Identify hazards and support corrective actions to maintain a safe work environment.

Maintain a clean, organised and compliant workshop area.
Workshop Operations

Support planning and prioritisation of work to meet operational requirements.

Liaise with supervisors regarding job progress, delays and resource needs.

Assist with materials handling, stock control and workshop organisation.
