Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Lead Diesel Mechanic / Fitter to join our team and take a hands-on leadership role in maintaining and supporting our plant and equipment fleet. This position is responsible not only for carrying out mechanical works but also for leading day-to-day mechanical operations, providing technical guidance to other mechanics.
Key Responsibilities
Perform preventative maintenance, servicing, and repairs on heavy earthmoving machinery (excavators, loaders, graders, dozers, rollers, articulated haul trucks), as well as trucks and light vehicles.
Diagnose and resolve complex mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical faults across a diverse fleet.
Perform scheduled servicing and breakdown repairs, both onsite and in the workshop, to minimise plant downtime.
Provide technical support, mentoring, and guidance to mechanics, apprentices, and contractors.
Conduct detailed inspections to identify wear, defects, compliance issues, and safety risks.
Ensure all plant and equipment is maintained to a high standard and remains compliant with safety and operational requirements.
Review and maintain accurate service records, maintenance schedules, logbooks, and job documentation.
Promote and enforce workplace health and safety standards, policies, and procedures, leading by example.
Skills and Experience
Trade qualification as a Diesel Mechanic / Fitter.
Extensive post-trade experience maintaining and repairing heavy earthmoving plant and machinery within civil construction, mining, or related industries.
Proven ability to lead or supervise mechanical works and support less experienced tradespeople.
Strong technical knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, transmissions, and electrical systems.
Advanced diagnostic and problem-solving skills with a practical, hands-on approach.
Strong communication and organisational skills, with the ability to coordinate workloads and priorities.
Current driver’s licence (HR or above highly regarded).
Strong commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and continuous improvement.
