Electrical Supervisor (Workshop)

Position Summary

The Electrical Supervisor (Workshop) is responsible for supporting the Workshop Manager in the supervision, coordination, and delivery of all electrical workshop activities within an OEM automation and control manufacturing environment.

This role provides direct day-to-day leadership of electricians, apprentices, and electrical trade assistants, ensuring electrical work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with Australian Standards, engineering specifications, and company quality requirements.

Working closely with the Workshop Manager, the Electrical Supervisor helps coordinate production priorities, allocate resources, and maintain workflow across electrical assembly, wiring, testing, and pre-commissioning activities.

The role is critical in delivering high-quality automation and control systems for heavy industrial sectors including oil & gas, coal mining, and natural resources.

Key Responsibilities

1) Electrical Supervision & Leadership

• Provide direct supervision of electricians, apprentices, and electrical trade assistants

• Support the Workshop Manager in planning and coordinating daily electrical workshop activities

• Work with Workshop Manager to allocate tasks based on priorities, skill levels, and production schedules

• Monitor workflow and report progress, constraints, and resource needs to the Workshop Manager

• Provide on-the-job technical guidance, instruction, and support

• Ensure adherence to electrical standards, drawings, and project specifications

2) Workshop Electrical Assembly & Wiring

• Interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, GA drawings, and technical documentation

• Assemble and wire control panels, MCCs, PLC systems, and industrial automation equipment

• Install and terminate power and control wiring to specification and industry standards

• Carry out point-to-point wiring checks and quality verification of assemblies

3) Testing, Fault Finding & Commissioning

• Perform electrical testing including insulation resistance, continuity, and functional testing

• Diagnose and rectify electrical faults in control systems and equipment

• Assist with in-house commissioning of OEM-built systems prior to dispatch

• Support integration testing of PLCs, instrumentation, and automation systems

4) Quality, Compliance & Safety

• Enforce WHS policies, safe work procedures, and electrical safety requirements

• Ensure strict compliance with AS/NZS 3000, wiring rules and relevant standards

• Promote and maintain lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) and isolation procedures

• Conduct, participate in and support toolbox talks, hazard identification, risk assessments, and safety initiatives

• Ensure high standards of workmanship, minimise rework and adherence to ISO 9001 Quality standards

5) Manufacturing & Production Support

• Work collaboratively within production schedules and build timelines

• Support internal testing and pre-commissioning activities prior to dispatch

• Assist in identifying and resolving production bottlenecks or technical issues

• Coordinate with mechanical, engineering, and stores teams as required

• Maintain high standards of workmanship and attention to detail

• Support continuous improvement initiatives within workshop processes

• Assist in maintaining tools, equipment, and workshop cleanliness

6) Training, Mentoring & Workforce Development

• Mentor and develop electricians and apprentices in technical and professional skills

• Provide structured guidance and coaching in trade practices

• Support competency development aligned with apprenticeship requirements

• Encourage safe work habits, discipline, and professional conduct

• Foster a collaborative and supportive workshop environment

7) Reporting & Communication

• Report daily progress, issues, and risks to the Workshop Manager

• Communicate resource constraints and production impacts promptly

• Provide input into scheduling, planning, and workforce allocation

• Support effective communication between workshop teams and management

• Other various duties or tasks as reasonably required by management

Qualifications & Experience

• Electrical Trade Qualification (Cert III Electrotechnology Electrician or equivalent)

• Current QLD Electrical Work Licence (Mechanic & Fitter)

• Current Driver’s Licence

• Instrumentation Qualification (desirable)

• Minimum 7-10 years’ experience in industrial electrical assembly or OEM manufacturing environments

• Experience working in or supporting supervisory roles in workshop environments

• Strong background in control systems, panel wiring, and industrial automation

• Experience in testing, fault-finding, and commissioning electrical systems

• Exposure to mining, oil & gas, or heavy industrial projects (highly regarded)

• Experience training or mentoring apprentices

• Competence with hand tools, electrical test equipment, and workshop machinery

• Must have ability to distinguish between various colours/shades and fine motor skills to complete wiring work.
